That fall in addition to Merry Widow, we also did Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) in English, and with the same translation by Andrew Porter I had learned at Iowa. This time I got the part of Papageno though it was double-cast. I wasn't complaining since I was sort of the newby still. We got to work with Patrick Bakman who directed for the New York City Opera, and he was great. Taught me a lot about acting. Sadly he passed away in 1990 at the young age of 46.
